Then we went to another clerk to verify that they had the watches, and they did. Then she pulled out the watch we were there to pick up, but Nada told us that watch cannot be the one because it was not on sale. We asked for the watch, but Helena did not put the watch on hold. Nada skipped over me to help another customer even though I was there first. I waited patiently for another sales clerk (Nada) to help me. When we arrived at 1:30, Helena was not there. My sister-in-law had put a watch on hold with Helena who said she would be working from 11am-7pm today. I shopped at Lord and Taylor at the Oakbrook Center. ![]() Why would anyone in their right mind shop in an outdoor mall in the winter when there are plenty of toasty indoor malls? ![]() This mall is designed for people who don't mind freezing while shopping. Walking through the outdoor mall when the temperature was 5 degrees F made my mouth freeze. Being from out of town, I managed to park in the farthest lot from Lord and Taylor's. I had to pick up a watch from Lord and Taylor's for my sister-in-law. It isn't Rodeo Drive or Worth Avenue but it has a distinctive air of good taste, like you're shopping in a tuxedo. This is what an upscale mall should be.glitzy, glamorous, green. ![]() There are several outstanding malls in the Chicago area but none of them offers as many upscale stores and as many top-notch restaurants as Oakbrook Center. You can even drop off your car to get a checkup at Sears Auto Center, then pick it up after your shopping day is concluded. There isn't anything you can't find-at a price, that is. Start early, break for lunch and finish up in the afternoon. It is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. There also is a wide variety restaurants, including Mon Ami Gabi, Maggiano's Little Italy, Houlihan's, California Pizza Kitchen, Cheesecake Factory, Corner Bakery, Old Town Pour House, Perry's Steakhouse, Elliott's Off Broadway Deli, Red Robin, Subway, Starbucks and Godiva Chocolatier. Fields Cookies, Disney Store, J.Crew, Barnes & Noble, Brooks Brothers and Henri Bendel. Peacock, Michael Kors, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Mrs. Other major retailers are Crate & Barrel, H&M, Mark Shale, Pottery Barn, Apple Store, Burberry, Banana Republic, Eddie Bauer, Tiffany, C.D. It currently has five anchor stores-Lord & Taylor, Macy's, Sears, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. It is the second largest shopping center (after Woodfield) in the Chicago area, houses 160 stores and restaurants and covers 2,018,000 square feet. Conveniently located at the intersection of I-88 and Route 83 in the posh western suburb of Chicago that was developed by businessman Paul Butler, who also founded nearbyt Butler National Golf Club, Oakbrook Center was built in 1962 by Philip M. Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook, Illinois, is the very definition of upscale shopping. Heavy duty shopping, or laid-back strolling and browsing this is a wonderful place to spend a few hours or several days. Some people seem dismayed with an open-air area in winter (and sometimes it can be a bit challenging) but there is something rather special about walking around the mall at night, around Xmas (especially if a light snow is falling).Īctually, all the seasons add a unique flavor to enjoying the experience. A wonderful variety of shopping options exist from moderate to high end, and ordinary to unique, one has many choices among which to pick.Īnd, a wide selection of dining establishments allows one to satisfy almost any culinary craving. Obviously things change, but this is still a special place to visit. There was very little else in the area (or even traveling to it) so emerging the darkness and spotting the white lights outlining the buildings was almost ethereal. ![]() Half a century ago, coming upon Oakbrook Mall at night was almost like arriving at a magical oasis.
